Jars of Clay Wins Myspace IMPACT Award

MySpace.com has announced the winner of their "MySpace Impact Awards" contest for December, 2007: Blood:Water Mission. For those unfamiliar with Blood:Water, the organization was founded by the Jars Of Clay guys several years ago to fight the poverty and sickness in Africa. Also, the winner of "MySpace Impact Awards" receives $10,000 in support. MySpace posted the following on their site:

"Blood: Water Mission is privileged to be a part of two rescues. The first is the tangible rescue from disease and poverty that plagues so many communities in Africa. We do this by supporting Africans as they use their knowledge and wisdom of their people, geography and customs, to create sustainable ways to rise out of poverty. The other rescue is the one that happens in the West: we, the chronically wealthy, being rescued from our trivia. We are helping people become aware of their choices, and how they affect people across oceans. It is an honor to win this award. The MySpace community is a fertile place to grow the seeds of justice, compassion, love and action."

Jars Of Clay "Love Came Down At Christmas"

This is from the 2007 Jars of Clay Christmas Album. MTV is dead, long live ipTV!

Love came down at Christmas
Love, a lovely love divine
Love was born at Christmas
Stars and angels gave the sign
Love will be our token
Love be yours, and love be mine
Love from God to all of us
Love for plea and gift a sign
Love for the 10 commandments
Love for the 9 that dress so fine
Love for the 8 that stood at the gate
Love for the 7 who went up to Heaven
Love for the 6 that never got fixed
Love for the 5 that stayed alive
Love for the 4 that stood at the door
Love for the Hebrew children
Love from the little babe, baby

New Album: The Essential Jars of Clay

The Essential Jars of Clay (Essential/Legacy/Sony)
Released September 2007
By Russ Breimeier
Sounds like … an artful blend of pop, rock, and folk reminiscent of Toad the Wet Sprocket, Sixpence None the Richer, Caedmon's Call, Counting Crows, and Gomez.

At a glance … a comprehensive near-perfect overview of the band's decade-plus career, benefiting from the inclusion of rarities, yet falling short by inexcusably omitting a handful of key tracks.

5. Tea and Sympathy
6. Fade to Grey

10. Grace
11. Cant Erase It
12. Unforgetful You
13. I Need You
14. Fly
15. Silence
16. Revolution
17. Coffee Song
18. New Math

Essential Records promoted 2007 as "The Year of Third Day" through the two Chronology albums celebrating the band's first decade. They could have just as easily billed it as "The Year of Jars of Clay" if that band hadn't parted ways with the label earlier in the year. In addition to their just released live EP Live Monsters and a forthcoming Christmas album comes this long overdue double-disc anthology, The Essential Jars of Clay.

No pun was intended by the title. This album arrives as part of Sony's Legacy series of compilations, which includes everyone from Billy Joel and Bruce Springsteen to Johnny Cash and Elvis Presley. To be marketed in a brand that focuses on such legendary artists speaks very highly of this band's place in the history of rock. Third Day may have enjoyed more consistent success in the Christian music culture, but Jars of Clay's success has consistently spilled over from the Christian market into the broader mainstream culture.

Thus it's only fitting these guys receive the red carpet treatment as well. As a fan anticipating the inevitable, I saw no way for a single-disc collection to do justice to a band that has amassed close to 20 No. 1 radio hits since their 1995 debut. Thankfully, the labels agreed, and with this set have represented nearly all of the major releases in the Jars discography with four tracks each.

For a comprehensive overview of the band's long string of success, this set comes awfully close to perfection. From the opening punch of "Flood" and "Liquid" to highlights from their acclaimed 2006 album Good Monsters like "Work," "Dead Man (Carry Me)," and "Oh My God," the album truly does live up to the title. (Well, almost. More on that in a bit.) It also acknowledges Jars' concert album Furthermore: From the Studio/From the Stage, their hymns project Redemption Songs, and their Little Drummer Boy Christmas EP along the way.

And it gets even better. Though Jars has no shortage of hits and favorites to fill two discs with, the album producers were generous enough to track down a handful of rarities to include as extra goodies for the devoted fans. Those who have failed to pick up the City on a Hill albums from Essential will appreciate the inclusion of "Bethlehem Town" and "This Road." Fans that haven't found The White Elephant Sessions disc of demos and rarities will find "New Math" and concert favorite "Coffee Song" as well. "Tonight" and "Shipwrecked" come as bonus tracks from Who We Are Instead. Probably the most obscure song unearthed here for the faithful is "The Widowing Field," a somber cut from the When We Were Soldiers soundtrack.

Here's the catch. For a collection titled The Essential Jars of Clay, the song selection sure bungled the If I Left the Zoo album. "Unforgetful You" is present of course, but how on earth were "Goodbye, Goodnight" and "Grace" included over "Collide" and "I'm Alright?" Likewise, why did the labels ignore "Overjoyed" from Much Afraid in favor of "Tea and Sympathy," or leave off "Show You Love" from Who We Are Instead? The biggest shock of all—brace yourself, fans—is that this anthology leaves out "Faith Like a Child," one of the signature songs from the debut. Lest you think I'm being a nitpicky fan, all of those omissions were No. 1 hits that are truly essential to Jars of Clay's repertoire.

The frustrating clincher is that both discs have room for at least two more songs each, so why not follow through on something that comes this close to getting it exactly right? It'd be easier to ignore this if Jars of Clay wasn't the rare band that has not only enough well-known hits to stuff a double-disc compilation with, but also enough rarities to fill a separate disc (perhaps even two). Between the missed songs, the typos in the CD packaging, and the lack of publicity for it, you can't help but wonder how much better this collection would have fared if it wasn't so hastily thrown together.

Still, it's hard to focus on the shortcomings of this release when you fully consider what's gained. The Essential Jars of Clay remains a generally comprehensive overview with one great song after another—offering enough hits to satisfy the casual fan, with enough lost gems to entice the devoted. That's a rarity in itself these days, though only appropriate for this uncommon band that hit the ground sprinting with their debut, and only grew artistically with time. Let's face it; hits albums aren't usually done this well. I'm glad in this case, because it helps cement the legendary status that Jars of Clay deserves.

Cebu Review by ArianneFaith

JARS OF CLAY -- SHOW YOU LOVE IN CEBU

"im gonna show you love in every language.
im gonna speak with words that need no form.
im gonna give you what you never had before."

"If I've done only ten right things in this lifetime... going to JARS
OF CLAY Concert was one of them."

I seldom go crazy over performers---not me to squirm, ogle and get
giddy on celebrities.
BUT when Jars of Clay came over, I was standing up in my chair,
jumping up and down with the rest of the crowd and screaming my lungs
out, singing with their songs.

IT WAS GREAT. I kept talking about it. I kept thinking about it...
hours and days after the concert lights went out.

NO offense to the opening act, but I sort of got impatient sitting in
the front row waiting for JARS OF CLAY... waiting for the front act to
finish. Still was the front act. pretty fine. but well.
I was waiting for JARS OF CLAY --- and I was still not able to believe
they were performing that night.
JARS OF CLAY? man, i've been like listening to their songs since I was
in highschool.
The hit single Flood just blew me away.... then Five Candles... then
Tea and Sympathy... and so many other hits.
I love Dan's voice. I love their lyrics (beautiful, introspective,
humbling, and none preachy). I love the melodies. I just love the
whole pack. And I love their attitude. A Christian Contemporary rock
band that penetrated MAINSTREAM POPULARITY without losing their heads,
without giving up what they started with... their humility intact,
their music not compromised. I love them for professing their faith in
a world not quite sane at awful lot of times

So I squirmed and screamed and got giddy that night.
The crowd was feverish, almost all hit songs from various albums were
performed by Jars of Clay, considering it was their first time ever in
the Philippines (i hope and wish and pray that it wasnt the last
though).

When JARS OF CLAY came out, opening it with the song "I need You", I
was having goosebumps in my head.
I was so OA. haha. But the ones around me were sort of teary-eyed too.
My friends were as noisy as I was, I dont know whose throat hurt the
most. My friend Petite was just going crazy screaming for her favorite
song Lonely People (a classic they revived).
The guys behind us were screaming Flood. I was screaming Tea and
Sympathy. My friend Anamae was just screaming. And my niece Ava was
like... mesmerized and mystified...she was awfully silent. We were
like, SO O--A. hahaha.

I kept screaming I Love You DAN!!! Grrr. My friend Anamae has this
little problem. She swore Steve the bassist kept glancing her way.
hahaha! Whatever. Petite just amazed me, she promised she won't get
wild that night because she wasn't feeling too well....but when the
concert was just about starting..you'd think she never had any
tootache the previous days. She was pumped up all of a sudden, I
almost told her to stop screaming for a bit. hehe. Wow that was just a
wonderful beautiful great once-in-a-lifetime experience. Thanks to
Jars of Clay for sharing us their music.

In other words it was insane, GREAT, GREAT, GREAT.

And the tease was, after JARS OF CLAY sang Flood, they sort of said
thanks and headed down stage...lights off. I was just staring at them
with my mouth open. NO NO NO. They wont sing TEA and SYMPATHY????
C'MON!!! the crowd was chanting for them to come back, although at the
back of our heads we know it was just a tease.

AH WELL, they came back shortly... and then, actually sang TEa and
Sympathy (lights mellowed)...
I was just teary-eyed when they actually sang tea and sympathy. It was
really nice.
And the crowd sang it with them. I knew that song by heart. I loved it
by heart. Everyone apparently does.

And then, for their finale, they did JESUS BLOOD. Anamae bowed down
her head and took in the moment. Petite raised her one hand and closed
her eyes. I wonder if those gestures would seem funny.... I was just
listening on...Ava and me, our eyes were on stage looking at the guys
perform... hearing "Jesus Blood never failed me yet..this one thing I
know is that HE loves me so.." over and over again. And I was feeling
so peaceful hearing that song.

Thank you JARS OF CLAY for that moment. Thanks for the MUSIC. THANKS
FOR THE FAITH.

CEBU LOVES YOU JARS OF CLAY.

Jars of Experience by joel14thwarrior

It was around the summer of 2001 when I started to appreciate the
songs of Jars of Clay. I have heard of the band way back in high
school during my sophomore years (1995), but did not explore their
music then. As I was listening to 99.5 RT, they played "Famous Last
Word" and at once I came to like the song. That moment, my interest on
the band started.

I had this great friend and his name is Arlfren "Gundamzer0." We were
classmates in organic chemistry (Chem 40). He had one of their albums,
entitled "If I Left The Zoo." I borrowed it from him sometime in July
of the same year. Summer was already over and school has begun. That
month was somber for he died on the 16th day. My semester just turned
ugly and painful. I could have known him more…I could have spent more
time with him, but the Lord already took him away from me. Soon I
learned to understand! I still thanked God for giving me the
opportunity to know Arlfren even for a short time. I was no longer
able to return the tape before he passed away. I just kept it safe and
secure in my room as a lasting memory of him. As I listened to the
other songs from that album, I began to appreciate their style of
music. The song "River Constantine" was for me the coolest!

A year later, in January, I went to Michigan State as an exchange
student. There, I met Matt. He attends Spartan Christian Fellowship.
We stayed on the same dormitory, he was on the first floor of the
building, while I was on the fourth floor. We were also classmate in
Unit Ops (ChE 316). I learned he had a CD of Jars of Clay self titled
album. I borrowed the CD from him, and in return, I lend him my CD "No
Name Face" from Lifehouse. Soon we became good friends. I joined them
in their cell group. We conducted bible study at East McDonel Hall
once a week. He treated me to the Iowa-MSU men's hoop. One time, I
asked favor from him because I had to apologize to my Aunt on
something. Spring Break has just ended and my Aunt came all the way
from New York to spend that week with me. She stayed at Howard
Johnson, and I had to see her before she leaves. So I asked Matt if he
could take me there. He looked around for people on the dorm who could
lend us a car and fortunately someone offered his. Great! On our way
to the inn, he turned on the car's CD player and plugged the
self-titled album of Jars. I learned that "Worlds Apart" was also his
favorite, and when it was played, we turned the volume higher! The
melody was just great. The message of the song was inspiring. I can
relate well to the lyrics because I could see my old and present life
on it. Here's a clip of the lyrics,

I look beyond the empty cross
Forgetting what my life has cost
And wipe away the crimson stains
And dull the nails that still remain
More and more I need You now
I owe You more each passing hour
Battle between grace and pride
I gave up not so long ago
So steal my heart and take the pain
Wash the feet and cleanse my pride
Take the selfish, take the weak
And all the things I cannot hide
Take the beauty, take the tears
The sin-soaked heart and make it Yours
Take my world apart
Take it now, take it now
And serve the ones that I despise
Speak the words I can't deny
Watch the world I used to love
Fall to dust and thrown away

Take my world apart
Take my world apart
I pray, and I pray, and I pray
Take my world apart
Worlds apart

Sometime in January or early February, I learned about "Eleventh
Hour" the fourth album of Jars of Clay, set to be released around
March of 2002. There was a rebate promo if you order early, so I did.
I purchased the CD in advance. I got hold of it, together with the
rebate, the second day after the release date. I bought the album from
a music store located somewhere in Okemos. Their fourth album was just
as great as the first and third. The songs "Fly," "Silence,"
"Something Beautiful," and "Edge of Water," are the ones I like the
most!

From then on, I already considered Jars of Clay, as my personal best
rock artist. I never knew then that rock music could be made in a way
that is pleasing to God and soothing to the soul. I have read some
information about them, and most people actually admire and consider
them as among the best Christian rock artists, having won and having
been nominated to the Grammy's for several times. Indeed, they have
established a flagship on the Christian contemporary music scene.

Spring semester came to an end, Matt and I departed from each other
unmindful that I still had his Jars of Clay and he still had my
Lifehouse. And so, I flew back to Philippines with his CD!!

Three years later, early January, Rainier told me that Jars of Clay
would be coming to the Philippines for a concert! Ow Yeah! We were
then going to Alabang Festival Mall to watch "Meet the Fockers." As
soon as I learned of it, my heart turned upbeat in excitement! I have
longed to watch them perform live. When I was still at MSU, I would
surf over the net and look for their upcoming concert line-ups near my
school. Unfortunately, there was not a schedule that fits my time…not
even in Detroit. I did not expect that it would be here in the
Philippines where I'm going to see them, to think that it is in the US
where you can have more chances of watching them. At once, I rushed to
the Araneta Coliseum one free weekend to buy a ticket. It was
memorable when I bought the ticket 'coz the ticket sales agent told me
that I was the first person to get hold of an upper box B ticket.

Then came the concert day, March 2, 2005. I have prepared for this. I
am already working and I had to adjust my schedule so that I could be
free on that day! Rainier and I decided to meet at Digital Digs Café
at 12 noon, eat our lunch before taking a bus. We arrived at the Big
Dome at around 5 pm. The concert was scheduled to start at 8 pm and
the gates opened at around 6:30 pm. Since we arrived early, we decided
to eat first at Pizza Hut Bistro, located just beside the coliseum. We
learned of it from a Taco Bell boy who has standing at the green gate
giving flyers. We ordered a family size pan pizza! I have never been
to a unique Pizza Hut before. Here, you can order a variety of
sumptuous meals other than the usual pizzas and side orders. The
ambiance was cool. Each table has a lit candle and a display of a
wine. They served free popcorn. Isko texted us and said he can join.
Yeah, we were three then! Rainier got his ticket from a street rep,
Isko got it complimentary, while I got it from ticketnet, cool! Isko
had the opportunity to talk to the band when they visited ABS-CBN. He
works there. He said that the interview was a bit nervous and
unbelievable for he did not expect he will be assigned to do that! He
told me they were really kind and humble!

At about 8:30pm, the concert started with a front act from Barbie's
Cradle. When it was Jar's turn, the crowd began to stand on their feet
and yell on top of their lungs. The first song that they played was "I
Need You" from the "Eleventh Hour" album and my throat already got
exhausted that early but I still managed to cheer for them 'til the
end. The three of us were jamming like we were situated front most. We
would jump to the drumbeats, lift our hands in the air in praise to
God. We would sing along, swing/clap left and right, let and right,
left and right. They played a lot of songs. As far as a could
remember, they were "Liquid," "He," "Like a Child," "Love Song for a
Savior," "Flood," "Worlds Apart," from their first album; "Crazy
Times," "Five Candles," "Tea and Sympathy," from their second album;
"I'm Alright," "Unforgetful You," from their third album; "Disappear,"
"Fly," "I Need You," from their fourth album; "Show You Love," "Sunny
Days," from their soon to be released fifth album, as well as "God
Lift Up Our Heads" a re-make included in their Redemption album. While
the songs were being played, I would reminisce some of the things that
happened to me during my college days, especially those times with
Arlfren and Matt, together with the good memories that I had at
Michigan State and University of the Philippines. The "Unforgetful
You" surprise gig was cool…no wonder the crowd was into it. When they
played "Worlds Apart," I just sat down, sang quietly and cried a bit.
They said it took them six months to make that powerful song. I was
particularly heartened to hear them said that among the songs that
they played, they haven't sang two of them at other concerts for
years, and they played them to us! After the last song, the crowd
would not leave, and we began to shout "We love Jars…we love Jars…"
and "Moooore…mooore." If not for their kindness, they would not have
played two more songs. The last song "Tea and Sympathy," was cool.
Thousands of cell phones flickered the dome and it looked wonderful
from our viewpoint! After the concert, we took pictures of ourselves
inside the coliseum as remembrance. I was hoping Dan would pass us by.
We went to Isko's office at ABS-CBN before sleeping over to their
house. He still had some work to do. Isko toured us around the
studios. We saw Erwin and Bernadette live while they were broadcasting
"The Insider." I was again hoping that Jars would pass us by again at
ABS-CBN before they get to rest and sleep in their hotel.
---
"Thank you Jars of Clay for coming to the Philippines, the first in
Asia, and among the few places visited outside United States! We
really had a great time with you at the concert! I may not had the
chance to come face to face with you guys, but I know that someday,
somehow, in God's time, I will shake hands with you and have Arlfren's
tape signed. God bless!"

that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us."

Writerguy/J's excellent magazine Quality Review!!

Jars of Clay 3/2/2005 Araneta Coliseum, Quezon City, Metro Manila, Philippines

That was rock 'n roll.

You can say all you want about the faults of CCM (Contemporary
Christian Music). And you'd probably be right. But don't ever say Jars
of Clay do not know how to rock. Because tonight I experienced
definitive proof to the absolute contrary.

Araneta Coliseum is the biggest popular indoor venue in the
Philippines. It hosts sporting events, mass revivals, circuses, and
more. Tonight it was in rock arena mode. A stage framed by lighting
skeletons took up one end of the bowl. Seats were placed on the bare
concrete floor, usually covered by hardcourt for basketball or
whatever else is necessary.

I was seated in the sixth row. It was a great seat: close enough to
see expressions, right on the aisle, dead center. I sat down and
started fidgeting. I couldn't wait.

Under my seat I'd stashed the pots. No, no, actual pots: earthenware,
raw clay pots, that I'd had in my place for a while. I'd run into Jars
(Dan Haseltine, Steve Mason, and Charlie Lowell) and bass player Aaron
Sands, at the Landmark department store earlier that morning, and
chatted with them while they shopped for souvenirs to take home.

I decided to make them souvenirs. I took the clay pots—mini-pots,
really, about three inches high and two inches in diameter—and drew
sketches of Filipiniana on one side and a Philippine Flag on the
other. I had five pots, so I did that to four of them, hoping somehow
to get them to Dan, Steve, and Charlie, and eventually to the missing
member Matt, home in the States due to a family loss. The fifth I left
blank: if I could get that autographed, that would be mine.

So as I sat before the concert I had these pots in a gift bag under my
chair. That was when I spotted Aaron by the sound booth. I decided to
go over.

"Aaron?"

He saw me and smiled. He remembered. I told him about the little pots
and he said "Oh, sure, I can take them to the guys." I felt bad that I
didn't get him one—he's not "officially" part of the band, but he and
drummer Joe Porter are always the live musicians who travel with
Jars—so I put it in as well. But he said, "No, no problem. I'll get
that autographed for you."

Ten minutes later I spotted him walk out. I hurried from my chair and
caught his attention. With a smile he gave me the little jar of clay
back—autographed by Dan, Steve, and Charlie. Aaron Sands, you are an
outstanding fellow.

The opening act was local rock group Barbie's Cradle. Barbie, its
frontwoman, has a perfect Leigh Nash voice and a hard grrl guitar. I'd
never heard them for real before so it was a great surprise.

Then the lights darkened and the screams began in earnest. The
Coliseum was about half or two-thirds full—about twelve thousand
people I guess. The floor was packed, though, and as Dan, Charlie, and
Steve got into place, everyone flooded into the aisles in front of the
stage.

I was close enough in my chair that I didn't need to join them,
but I didn't sit but once the whole concert.

Jars of Clay fans in the Philippines had ten years of history to
relive, and Jars obliged, with a setlist crammed with songs from every
one of their five studio albums, including gems long forgotten in
Stateside concerts. The band started out with "I Need You" and
followed with "Sunny Days". Dan greeted the wild crowd, getting wilder
by the minute, and whipped them into a frenzy with a rocked-out "Like
A Child."

Without Matt Odmark, the band's sound was extra hard, Steve's electric
guitar doing double duty and his own acoustic performances having to
work both as lead and as rhythm. Of course The Steve was up to it.

The guys looked great. Dan has slimmed down considerably and his long,
wavy, messy hair gave him the air of a Romantic poet. Charlie was
sporting the new Blood:Water shirt, deep blue with red lettering.
Steve's new longer locks and longsleeve button shirt was pure Rock
Star. He took that off later in the concert to reveal his famous "Mama
Tried" tee.

Dan apologized for taking ten years to get to the Philippines, to
which the adoring crowd roared "Yeah!", and said they'd try to make up
for it by playing a lot of old songs.

And did they ever: in close
succession came "Five Candles", again with an amazing hard edge
compared with the album version; and, in a surprise that left me
swooning, "He", one of the most touching songs on the self-titled.

Taking down the amplitude a bit was "Lonely People" and "Frail",
allowing those who wished to sit, to do so. Steve took over at the end
of Frail, ripping off a percolating duet between his electric guitar
and Charlie's piano keyboard.

Dan startled the audience when he started asking about how Filipinos
loved karaoke.

He then said that for this next song, he wanted a
member of the audience to sing lead, since they were singing so many
old songs they forgot the words to. (Steve pointed at Dan to be
exact.) He asked for the audience member by name, and up comes the guy
on stage. Dan then asks for the guy's girlfriend to join him, saying
he couldn't do this alone. Dan gives them the mike, picks up his
tambourine, and then Steve starts the weird mutter at the beginning of
"Unforgetful You".

Well it was awful and delightful. The poor guy was tone deaf, but he
was full of enthusiasm, and Dan did pop in from time to time. And the
audience was loving it, doing the hand claps that are a part of that
song. It was a big hit by the time the song wound up: but it wasn't
over. "I think there's something else we have to do?" Steve said.

Yes, there was.

Ladies and gentlemen, we have an on-stage proposal.

She said yes. Filipinos, being an unashamedly sentimental people, loved it.

"That's what it's all about!" Dan yelled enthusiastically as the
now-betrothed finally exited stage left.

The hard rock edge of the night was never more out front than with the
very first track off the self-titled, "Liquid." The original produced
by Adrian Belew had a Gregorian chant loop in the background; the
Furthermore disc produced an acoustic coffeehouse version; but this
one was rock. Between Dan, Steve, and Charlie's vocals was Steve's
guitar and the all-out rhythm section, Aaron and Joe Porter.

If that rocked-out version was a trip, then what happens when Jars
plays one of their real rock songs? "Crazy Times" sent everyone into a
frenzy. The breakdown ("Try to climb a broken ladder") had Steve
skipping halfway across the stage as Dan fell on his knees. Then Steve
took over, going to the very lip of stage left with full spotlight on
him, as he tore the dome off the stadium with his guitar solo. The
poor Araneta sound system! He nearly ripped it to shreds.

All this followed by Dan's Crazy Times Jump. The crowd whooped and
began to thrash and head-bang. This concert was all about everything
we'd always wanted to see.

It was a surprise when Dan announced they were about to play the one
song they had played practically every concert every year of their ten
years together. "World Apart" is often their encore, but this evening
they made it their centerpiece. It was the short version, without an
extended instrumental at the end; but it began with Dan and Steve
alone and built with Charlie and then the bass and the drums.

Now it so happened that as I'd sat in my seat earlier, I'd seen a nail
on the floor by my shoe. I picked it up. It was a simple common
carpenter's nail, about two inches long. I thought it interesting and
pocketed it.

When Dan went into the impassioned ramble of "Worlds Apart" ("I look
beyond the empty cross/ Forgetting what my life has cost") I figured
it out. I reached into my pocket and took out the nail. It was tangled
in my rosary. As Dan's voice implored and Steve's guitar soared, I
held up my hands, cross in one hand, the nail I'd found in the other,
singing with them, since we all had been singing with them: take my
world apart, take my world apart, take my world.

With all these old songs stirring up memories in all the audience, it
was time to introduce the newest of songs. The crowd uttered a nervous
laugh when Dan announced the words to the next song was written in the
seventeenth century, or the 1700's, one or the other. But, he said,
they'd fiddled with it. This was the new single. Hard, driving rock
was the rule of the concert all night, and hard, driving rock is
exactly what Jars gave in "God Will Lift Up Your Head". Judging from
the screams and the impromptu mosh pit at stage front, it was an
instant hit.

After that it was all ecstasy: "Fly," people swooning at the high note
melody between Dan and Steve; "Show You Love", the big single,
everyone singing along (Dan promising to "get our people to talk to
your people" about the lack of Jars albums in local distribution);
"I'm Alright", Steve's guitar and Charlie's keyboards taking the role
of the original choir, and Dan doing his patented call-and-response
with the audience, thrilling them with the high shrieks and the last
low growl and of course all three of them whistling.

And then came "Flood", which needs no description. Packed floor.
Hysterical fans. Jumping. Singing along. Band feeding off the energy
of the crowd. Hard, hard rock, crunching and thrashing. "Lift me up!
Lift me up! Lift me up!" You could tell the magic of the Filipino
audience had worked on Dan and the others. We're nothing if not
enthusiastic.

After a short and completely unbelievable walk-off (we all knew they
were coming back), up came the encore: "Disappear", chosen probably
because the local music channel had been playing 11live over and over
the past few days; and then, the finale.

I don't know when "Tea and Sympathy" became Philippine Jarkdom's
favorite song; but it had. Dan said, "We've got time for one more
song, all right?" and then sang, "Fare thee well…"

It worked. The pounding rock that dominated the evening melted into
the song's intrinsic balladlike nature. All night long the crowd had
been singing along, and it was no different now; but when they sang
"Don't trade us for tea and sympathy!" with Dan, it was clear they
meant it, and hoped he did too.

Then something happened. Araneta doesn't allow cameras; but everyone
in the Philippines has a cellphone, and throughout the evening, people
had been running up and down taking snapshots with their cameras. So
you would see hands up holding up cellphones, their screens shining in
the darkness. This then happened: people began to turn their phones
around, turn the dim setting to off, and wave them in time to the
music. The girl next to me did this; the people in the next row did
this; I did this. It was fun, I thought; a new 21st-century version of
the impromptu ode, the way people used to do with their own lighters,
the way it just wasn't the same with glowsticks you didn't really own
or care about.

So we waved our cellphones and lost ourselves in the song. And then I
noticed the looks on the guys' faces. And I turned around.

And thousands of little lights were waving, across the floor and up
the steps and up into the decks to the roof.

It was magical.

Nobody got up to applaud Jars of Clay as they took their bow together.

Nobody had been sitting down to begin with. The seats were neglected;
excitement was too strong for folding chairs. Jumping, whistling,
screaming, applauding, Manila gave Jars of Clay an ovation made from
long-awaited joy.

I tried to sneak backstage with the fan club members for the autograph
signing, but wasn't smooth enough. It was all right; I'd already met
them earlier, had a nice talk; with the inestimable help and
graciousness of Aaron Sands, had gotten my gifts to them; and again
thanks to Aaron, had in my pocket a jar of clay signed by Jars of
Clay.

Dan promised it wouldn't be ten years before they came back. We're
holding you to that promise, Dan!

Yek's moment

By Yek Dizon, the guy who proposed

The best concert I've ever been to!!! Got tickets to
the front row so I can go up the stage faster!!!
Hahaha

It started out with the front act, Barbie's Cradle!!!
First time I saw a girl really rock! She rocks!!! She
sang several songs and her last song I think was the
torpe song.

Then the lights went out.... it was time, Jars of Clay
was about to play. Even before they started, my right
ear started to become numb coz of my friend's
senseless shouting "Ayun na! kita ko na buhok nila!!!
Ayan ayan, si Dan aakyat na!" hahaha Anyway they
started out with "I Need You" to get the crowd pumped
up early. The songs that followed were great!!!! Then
at the middle of the concert, Dan talked to the crowd
about Filipinos loving karaoke, so he asked someone
from the crowd to sing with them because they suddenly
forgot the lyrics of the song....so they called.....
ME, Yek Dizon....... Jars of Clay called my name!!!!
hehehe Then they called my girlfriend Monique up the
stage...... We sang Unforgetful You with them on
stage.... I was so into it, I felt like a rockstar but
I knew I was out of tune (the crowd's ears must have
bled from my singing) hahaha!!! I couldn't hear my
voice and couldn't follow the lyrics but I didn't
care, I was jamming with Jars of Clay man!!! Good
thing the crowd was singing with us, great crowd " I
love you Manila" I forgot to say those words on stage
hehehe. Then after, it was time, time to give the
ring.... good thing steve stopped Monique from going
down the stage..... Then Steve and Dan held the mic
for me... I knelt and said, "Ms. Monique Javier, I
don't think ten years is enough for me, let's make it
forever..... Will you Marry Me???" Whoa the crowd was
great and very supportive! Monique eventually said
yes.... Then after the proposal... on with the
concert!!! They played a few more songs, then there
was the song I've waiting for all night FLOOD!!!!
Everyone was jumping and singing!!!! Great song and
great performance.....then after, they momentarilly
left the stage to give an "encore performance". The
last song they played was Tea and Sympathy..... My
friend lit a lighter but the Araneta security gave him
a stare like he was gonna bite my friend "Grrrr Arf
arf"". As an alternative to the lighter, the crowd
used their cellphones!!! Hahaha Pinoys improvised!!!

Great experience!!! Unforgetful talaga!!! Thank you
Jars of Clay!!! Thank you for your help!!!

tinamat's story

I realized that nothing probably beats patron seats, so the next time
I watch a concert, I'll make sure I'm up at front. But what the heck.

I didn't have a particularly great day yesterday. In fact, I was quite
moody a few hours before the concert. My mood got lifted a bit before
Nadz picked me up.

We headed over to The Podium to meet Mon, and then we headed to
Araneta. After parking at Gateway mall, I went to Odyssey to look for
Who We Are Instead, their latest album. They didn't have any copies,
so we headed to the coliseum to see if they are selling their CDs
there. We went in, and true enough, there was! I ended up buying Much
Afraid and Who We Are Instead. Goodbye, P850…

So we went around, looked at our seats and marveled at how close we
are. We went out again to buy dinner, saw Kuya Wilmon, went to Wendy's
and then went back in.

There were freebies – FiSH's latest issue, and
some other magazine devotional. We sat there, eating, and I couldn't
wait for the show to start. I watched people fill in the coliseum – in
fairness, it wasn't full. But there were a lot of people.

The lights were dimmed and the people started shouting and screaming.
Mr. Bo Sanchez came out for the opening remarks, and then the
Philippine National Anthem and then Barbie's Cradle entered. They
played One Good Day, Torpe, Money for Food, Pag-Ibig and Tabing Ilog
(not in that order). I could see that Barbie was also excited for Jars
of Clay to start performing.

After Barbie's Cradle, the lights dimmed again and they played the
Jars of Clay promo video and the FiSH video, and then when they
stopped playing the video, the people started screaming again, and
then I got my digicam and started video-ing. (That's why I don't have
pictures here because I used everything up for the video. ehehe)

When the lights went on, Dan Haseltine was on stage, wearing green.
Charlie Lowell was on keyboards, wearing dark blue; Steve Mason was
wearing a blue polo. I was so overwhelmed seeing them live, in front
of me! WOHOO! Dream come true.

Anyway, their first song was I Need You and I couldn't help singing
out loud with them. Dan's voice sounded just like in the CD, and I can
see how much he feels the song. They sang Sunny Days next, and I sang
along too, even if I know just half of the lyrics. They greeted the
people and then they started to play the next song and I thought it
was Art in Me but it was Like a Child. Imagine how thrilled I was then
– it's the first Jars of Clay song I ever downloaded!

After that, they played Love Song for a Savior and then I can't
remember the next song they played. Haha. I think it was Five Candles,
and amazing was they told us that they don't play the song anymore,
but because people here love that song, they played it.

When they played Liquid, it was amazing. The light effects were
amazing, fits the song perfectly. I half-expected them to do the
Gregorian chant that the song has.

Then they played Frail and the entire coliseum was very solemn. Then
they introduced the next song and I thought they will sing Something
Beautiful, but they played Worlds Apart. I got teary-eyed when I heard
the introduction – my favorite song! It was VERY beautiful, their
best song ever. After that, I think they played Lonely People, for
those who got turned down with dates.

The memorable part of the night was when one of the audience was
called upstage to sing Unforgetful You with the band. (Haha, how I
wish I could have hugged Dan too…hehe). The guy went up, and then they
called his girfriend. After singing, they were about to go down, but
they said that there was something more, and the guy explained that
that day was their 10th year anniversary together, and that he bought
the tickets as a gift for her girlfriend because they both love the
band. And then he said there was another gift, and we all knew what it
was. True enough, he pulled out a small box from his pocket and then
knelt down. Aaron went over to help him with the mic and he proposed
to her onstage! How sweet. After the proposal, they played Fly.

I can't remember the order of the next songs, but they played He,
Crazy Times, I'm Alright, Flood (amazing song, I ran out of breath
while singing that!) and then they played a new song from their
upcoming album, Redemption Songs. It was God Will Lift Up Your Head, a
song that was originally from 1737. Very cool remake.

They also sung Show You Love (of course, that's the title of the tour)
and then for their encore, they sang Disappear and their last song was
Tea and Sympathy. The moment Dan sang, "Fare thee well…" (first line
of Tea and Sympathy), people started screaming and then they started
waving their cellphones in the darkness. REALLY cool.

The concert was over and so we headed out. A lot of people were buying
the CDs and we were waiting there just in case there would be an
autograph signing. A woman approached us and told us that they will be
closing soon and there might be an autograph signing at the south
gate. So we headed over there and waited, then I saw a YFC friend, and
she told me they left already. She told me I should have texted her
so she could get my CDs signed, but she said she'll try to get me an
autographed poster and she'll send me their pictures. Whee.

It only sank in this morning, and I couldn't stop smiling. It's not
like the Stephen Speaks experience I had, but it is still pretty
amazing. It was my first time to watch a concert at The Big Dome, and
it was them! It's really amazing how humble they was when they were
performing, and how lively everyone was – almost like a worship. I've
been listening to their songs over and over again and I'm sure I won't
get sick of them.

I wish I could've went over to Greenbelt 3 to see them as well because
apparently they're doing some last minute shopping, but I'm stuck in
school, and I couldn't leave here. –; Oh well. I'm still thankful.
Very very thankful for everything that happened. Early birthday
present, as I said. I will watch them when they come back (it's not
if, it's when – I believe they will go back!), and this time it's
patron seats for me. Plus I will make sure I meet them all.

And there goes my Jars of Clay experience. THANK YOU, LORD. Without
You, I would not have been able to watch. In fact, they wouldn't even
be here at all. Thank You so much!

Amazing grace I feel you coming up slowly now, like the sun is rising
here on my face…oh love that keeps on shining, don't let the shadow
come…

neil's post

i wont even attempt at describing how outstanding the concert was or
how happy i felt that memorable night, dahil alam ko i'll be so
redundant at saying words that only lead to one description. at yun ay
PERFECT. Honestly, mrami na akong pinalampas na concerts ng iba pang
fave foreign artists ko todits sa manila but when I heard that Jars
would be playing here, grabe, hindi na ako nagdalawang isip na
pumunta. Pambihira talaga. Trouble was, ni isa na mga kaibigan ko e
gusto akong samahan. at the last minute ay nangungulit pa ako sa
kanila pero ayaw talaga. pero sabi ko sa sarili ko, pwede naman me
magenjoy kahit ala sila. to cut the long story short, ayun, pumunta me
magisa don. sa sobrang excited ko, I left home 3 hours before the
concert! ha ha ha.ang saya. grabe, at the concert, never in my life
kong naisip na I'd be so happy and stricken at one. The best talaga.
Siya talga yung tipo ng concert na titimo sa puso mo! It really has a
lot of substance! di tulad ng concert ng ibang artists na tipong
pupunta ka, manunuod ka, uuwi ka pero para ala kng baong saya at
heavenly satisfaction. At one point, sa sobrang pagaasam ko na makita
sila and to hear them, napaiyak ako! back in the past, kapag
.napakasaya ko talaga and I know the same goes out
to all peeps who attended there. This is the kind of hang-over na ayaw
kong mawala. I'll treasure this experience for as long as I live.
thanks for reading!
